THE BABY AND THE BATHWATER
I'm teaching students in my Painting I class the fundamentals of Western European painting (the baby). . . But with a simultaneous focus on the contexts in which this tradition has functioned and continues to function in culture (the bathwater).  I'll present three specific episodes from the three sections of my class — pre-modern, modernist, and postmodern — as tools for addressing painting and how race affects our understanding of its traditions, languages and techniques.
